About Alan
Alan Terence Shao II was born on August 31, 1995 in Charlotte, NC. He was the son of Dr. Alan Terence Shao, Sr. and Carol Ann Shao and had two sisters, Janine Shao and Victoria Benson.
Alan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Charleston in December 2021. He worked in catering and events at the Francis Marion Hotel and enjoyed spending time with his family and dog Dunkin, music, concerts, skateboarding, bowling and theme parks.
He was known for his kind heart and a willingness to tell others that he loved them, whether it was his nephew, a former high school classmate or someone he worked with. Alan II also had a unique vulnerability and openness…never shying away from mental health or substance abuse conversations. He wanted to make sure that no one was embarrassed by it and that they knew they weren’t fighting the disease alone.
On January 29, 2023 he suddenly passed away from a fentanyl overdose.
The golf invitational tournament is dedicated to Alan II, whose passing opened many eyes to the dangers of drug addiction. We are hoping to raise as much money as possible to educate and support young people and their families on drug addiction prevention, mental health and available treatments. It is through his inspiration that we hope to prevent as many of these senseless deaths as possible. Thank you for being a part of our team.
